Debt Management Offers ...Too Good To Be True?
It's your money - don't risk losing it! In thesetough economic times, scam artists areseizing the opportunity to take advantage ofthose that have fallen behind on theirpayments. If you find yourself in debt, there are manythings to consider before seeking any outside help.
Debt advertising is everywhere - these ads can beextremely tempting for anyone experiencing creditproblems. But, the BBB warns, enlisting the help ofthese agencies may actually leave your creditin worse shape than if you had ignored theenticing offers altogether.
Many of these "debt management" companies operate byexploiting the uncertainties that people have regarding somebasic debt terminology. The terms companies use oftenconfuse their customers and include:Debt Negotiation/Settlement:* They claim to negotiate with lenders to lower aconsumer's total debt owed for an upfront fee. Peoplethat pay for this service may find that their lender wasnever contacted by the company they hired, whoinstead took the money and ran.Debt Consolidation:* They offer to 'roll up' various debts to allow forone lower payment to be made to their company, rather than having to make many payments todifferent lenders. Companies that offer this servicemay charge high fees and interest rates to theconsumer - You could end up paying much more inthe long run.Debt Elimination:* They claim your upfront fee to their companywill result in a document presented to the lender thatsupposedly absolves you of your debt. However, youwill later find out that this document has no bearingwhatsoever and your full debt remains, along with thefee that was originally paid to the debt eliminationcompany, and usually additional over-the-limit andother late fees to the lender.********BBB offers the following advice for consumers to followbefore enlisting the help of any business to manage debt:* Stay in contact with lenders and try to work out a plan on yourown first before enlisting outside help.*Always check the company out first with BBB. BBB ReliabilityReports on debt negotiation, consolidation, and eliminationcompanies are available online for free at bbb.org.****A great step is to start with a credit counseling service. Creditcounseling services, like Consumer Credit CounselingServices, are often nonprofits, members of the NationalFoundation for Credit Counseling and offer financialguidance for a small fee, or for free in many cases. not accumulate overnight and getting out of it will also take
considerable time. There is no easy fix for reducing debt
and any company that makes huge claims and guarantees,
probably can't deliver.
